Reconstructions Colour Palette

       Ripperstreet

For the colour palette I like the earthy colour grade that the Loydes Bank Advert has (with the shire horses ploughing the field). The images have a brownish hint to them, a similar grading has been applied to Ripperstreet and Saving Private Ryan, although the latter also has a (too) washed appearance that I don’t like or want.

I think the browny hint aids the concept of ageing the images to the audience. Maybe this is due to the familiarity of vintage sepia toned photographs.

Nice Saving Private Ryan image but it looks washed out.

Now that the reconstruction 16mm film is back from the laboratory, we can see that all the gallows shots have come back damaged with red blushes and scorched with light leaks.

The blush runs over most of the exterior shots.

Production Still

A suggested solution  was to remove the colour and give it a sepia tone.
The monochrome image actually works really well making the film stock look vintage. The problem now will be  how do we mucky up the good footage.
A soft sepia suits me and it will remain in keeping with the original brown tones of the colour grade.

It is an improvement.

The light leak shows at the left hand corners of the gate aperture.
